to me it feels like there are rarely any cheaters left in the scene, majority of players left are clean imo.

of course there will still be the odd cheater, but it's a lot less hacked than in the past :p

just got my new pc, windows 8.1 tried to install cod2, got an error:

1603 - heavy error

can anyone help? im crying lol

A lot of Win8 users have a different problem regarding cod2. Usually 1603 error is due to encryption or permissions of User or Group folders. Try maybe google that, because it might be problem in instalation folder.

I would try to reinstall it and install on this way.

1) Right-click > Open on the drive containing the CoD2 DVD

2) Select setup.exe > Right Click > Properties > privilege Level put the check on "Run this program as an administrator" - Apply, double click on setup.exe and install the game.

3) Install the DirectX 9.0c (Right Click and Run as administrator).

4) Install the Call of Duty 2 Patch 1.3 (Right Click and Run as administrator).

5) Locate the Call of Duty 2 folder (C:\Program Files (x86)\Activision\Call of Duty 2), select CoD2MP_s.exe > Right Click > Properties > Compatibility and set compatibility mode for Windows XP SP3 (or s1, s2). In privilege Level put the check on "Run this program as an administrator".

6) When launch the Multiplayer may happen that you will see two mouse icons, one of the game and one of windows, press the windows button of your keyboard for go back at windows and click the call of duty icon on the taskbar for come back into the game. After it should work.

Regarding compatibility, it should be set on win xp s1 or s2 and marked as Run as administrator but as I see that you have fatal error 1603, compatibility shouldn't be the problem.

One of funny solutions was actually that all you need is to a mic plugged in and have it enabled in your sound settings, and then multiplayer would work. You could unplug the mic after the game is launched.

Those are all ways that helped people run cod2 on win 8 or 8.1. Im still using 7 so I'm not maybe the right person for solutions but you can always try one of these.
